The best AI content tool for WordPress depends on where you want the AI to sit: inside the block editor, inside the SEO plugin you already run, or outside WordPress in a writing tool that publishes to it. Below are nine options we re-checked on their own sites in September 2026, with prices as listed that month, how external tools connect, and a workflow that keeps AI-assisted posts accurate enough for search engines and AI answers to cite.

## What changed for WordPress AI in 2026

WordPress still runs a large share of the web: W3Techs’ September 2026 survey puts it at 58.8% of sites whose content management system it can identify, which is 40.3% of all websites. [1](#sprk-src-1) Version 7 is already used by 61.5% of WordPress sites in the same survey. [2](#sprk-src-1)

That matters because AI moved into WordPress itself. The official AI plugin, built on the AI Building Blocks for WordPress initiative (an AI Client library plus the Abilities API), requires WordPress 7.0 or higher and reports more than 50,000 active installations. [3](#sprk-src-2) Instead of every plugin shipping its own API key box, sites can configure AI connectors once and let features use them. The rest of this guide sorts tools by that split: built-in AI, plugins that bring their own AI, and tools outside WordPress.

## Quick picks

| Tool | Type | Entry price (September 2026) | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| WordPress AI plugin | Official plugin, bring your own provider | Free; you pay your AI provider | Trying core AI features in the block editor |
| AI Engine (Meow Apps) | Plugin, bring your own keys | Free; Pro from $79/year for 1 site | Chatbots, content generation, MCP access for agents |
| Jetpack AI Assistant | Hosted AI in the editor | Free for 20 requests; paid plan after that | Drafting and editing inside blocks with no key setup |
| AIOSEO | SEO plugin with AI Content | Basic $49.50/year (first-year price) | SEO titles, meta descriptions and FAQs |
| Yoast SEO Premium | SEO plugin with AI Generate | $118.80/year (excl. VAT) | Titles and meta descriptions, including in bulk |
| Rank Math | SEO plugin with Content AI | PRO plans billed annually | Rank Math users who want AI inside the same plugin |
| GetGenie | AI writing and SEO plugin | Free plan (2,500 AI words/month) | Small sites that want keyword research plus drafts |
| Divi AI | Page builder AI | $193/year, or included in Divi Pro | Divi sites generating layouts, text and images |
| Suparank | External platform that publishes to WordPress | Starter $49.99/month | Content grounded in your site audit and GA4/GSC data |

Prices from each vendor’s own pricing page, checked September 2026. Suparank is the publisher of this article.## The official WordPress AI plugin

The plugin named simply “AI” on WordPress.org is the reference implementation of WordPress’s AI building blocks. It needs the block editor; the Classic Editor is not supported. [4](#sprk-src-2) Its current feature list includes: [5](#sprk-src-2)

- **Alt text generation** for images, in the image block and in bulk from the Media Library.
- **Content resizing** to shorten, expand or rephrase selected blocks.
- **Content summarization** and **content translation** of paragraph and heading blocks.
- **Content classification** that suggests tags and categories.
- **Image generation and editing** from post content.
- **Comment moderation** based on toxicity detection and sentiment analysis.
- **Admin controls:** an Abilities Explorer, AI request logging, connector approvals and encryption of provider API keys at rest.

The catch: the plugin does not include an AI provider. You install at least one AI Connector plugin and add its credentials under Settings, Connectors; until then, features can look unavailable. [6](#sprk-src-2) Hosts and agencies can pre-configure connectors so their users don’t need their own keys. [7](#sprk-src-2)

**Choose it if** you are on WordPress 7 and want editor-level helpers (alt text, summaries, translations) without adopting a large third-party suite. **Skip it if** you want a full article writer or you are still on the Classic Editor.

## AI plugins and SEO plugins, compared

### 1. AI Engine by Meow Apps

AI Engine has more than 90,000 active installations on WordPress.org. [8](#sprk-src-3) It works on a bring-your-own-keys model: you connect your own account with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Mistral, Perplexity or OpenRouter and can switch providers later. [9](#sprk-src-4) Beyond content generation it adds chatbots that answer from your own content, forms, embeddings, and an MCP server that lets ChatGPT, Claude or other MCP-aware agents manage the site through conversation. [10](#sprk-src-4)

- **Pros:** free core plugin, provider choice, strong developer features.
- **Cons:** you manage keys and provider bills yourself; the MCP access is powerful enough to need careful permissions.
- **Pricing:** free; Pro is $79/year for 1 website, $99/year for 5 and $179/year for 20, with lifetime licenses also listed. [11](#sprk-src-5)

### 2. Jetpack AI Assistant

Jetpack AI Assistant is Automattic’s hosted option: no API key, AI built into blocks. It generates text, images, tables and lists, adjusts tone, fixes spelling and grammar, and writes titles and summaries. [12](#sprk-src-6) The free tier covers 20 requests; after that you need the paid plan, whose first-year discount does not apply to renewals. [13](#sprk-src-6)

- **Pros:** nothing to configure, lives where you already write.
- **Cons:** the free quota is only enough to evaluate it; the paid plan has a fair-usage limit rather than a fixed request count.

### 3. AIOSEO (All in One SEO)

AIOSEO’s AI Content generator creates SEO titles and meta descriptions (per post or in bulk), FAQ blocks with schema markup, key points, social posts, email copy and blog drafts. It is available to both Lite and Pro users and draws on a monthly allotment of AI credits, which can also be bought separately. [14](#sprk-src-7)

- **Pros:** AI output lands directly in the SEO fields and FAQ blocks you already use.
- **Cons:** credit-based, and the bigger discounts are first-year prices.
- **Pricing (first year):** Basic $49.50, Plus $99.50, Pro $199.50 and Elite $299.50 per year, against normal prices of $99, $199, $399 and $599. [15](#sprk-src-8)

### 4. Yoast SEO Premium

Yoast’s AI Generate writes SEO-optimized titles and meta descriptions for posts, pages, products and categories, one page at a time or in bulk. It is included in Yoast SEO Premium, Yoast WooCommerce SEO, Yoast SEO AI+ and Yoast SEO for Shopify. [16](#sprk-src-9) Yoast SEO Premium is listed at $118.80 per year, excluding VAT. [17](#sprk-src-10)

- **Pros:** strong fit if Yoast already runs your metadata; bulk generation saves real time on large archives.
- **Cons:** focused on metadata and guidance, not long-form drafting.

### 5. Rank Math (Content AI)

Rank Math sells its AI as Content AI, alongside the Rank Math SEO plugin. PRO, Business and Agency plans are billed annually and each comes with a free Content AI trial, from the Starter tier on PRO up to the Expert tier on Agency. [18](#sprk-src-11) When we checked, the pricing page listed PRO at €7.99 a month billed annually; check the page in your own currency before buying. [19](#sprk-src-11)

- **Pros:** one vendor for SEO fields, schema and AI suggestions.
- **Cons:** Content AI beyond the trial is a separate purchase, so budget for both.

### 6. GetGenie

GetGenie bundles AI writing with keyword research, competitor analysis and templates for one-click or step-by-step blog posts. Its free plan includes 2,500 AI words a month with no credit card, and the paid Starter plan raises that to 20,000 AI words a month. [20](#sprk-src-12)

- **Pros:** keyword and SERP research in the same place as the draft.
- **Cons:** word allowances cap how much you can generate each month.

### 7. Divi AI

Divi AI is for sites built with the Divi theme and builder. It generates layouts, text, images and code inside the Visual Builder. For existing Divi customers it costs $193 billed yearly or $21.36 a month billed monthly, and it is also included in the Divi Pro bundle at $277 billed yearly. [21](#sprk-src-13)

- **Pros:** designs and copy generated in the same builder.
- **Cons:** only useful if your site is on Divi.

## Connecting external AI tools to WordPress

If you write outside WordPress (in ChatGPT, Claude, a content platform or your own script) the clean way to publish is the REST API with an Application Password. WordPress has shipped Application Passwords since version 5.6; you generate one on the Edit User screen in wp-admin and send it with Basic Auth on requests served over https. [22](#sprk-src-14)

A minimal request that creates a draft looks like this:

```
curl --user "USERNAME:APPLICATION_PASSWORD" \
  -X POST https://example.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"title":"Draft from my AI tool","content":"<p>Hello</p>","status":"draft"}'
```

Three habits keep this safe:

- Create a separate WordPress user for each tool, with the lowest role that can do the job (Author is usually enough for drafts).
- Send drafts, not published posts, so a person reviews every AI-assisted article before it goes live.
- Revoke the Application Password from the same user screen when you stop using the tool.

### Publishing from Suparank

Suparank connects to WordPress the same way: you add your site and an Application Password, and the app publishes through the REST API as a draft by default or as a live post. Every plan includes content plans and briefs; full long-form article writing needs the Content Planner add-on at $29.99 a month. What makes the output different is the input: drafts in the [AI content studio](/product/ai-content/) draw on facts from your own site audit and connected analytics data rather than a blank prompt.

## A workflow that keeps AI content citable

Google’s position is that generative AI is useful for research and adding structure, but using it to produce many pages without adding value can violate its scaled content abuse policy. [23](#sprk-src-15) It asks for accuracy, quality and relevance, including in titles, meta descriptions, structured data and image alt text. [24](#sprk-src-15) A workflow that respects that:

1. **Start from real demand.** Pull the questions people already search for from Search Console, and the prompts where competitors are named in AI answers.
2. **Brief with sources.** List the facts the article needs and the primary page that proves each one before any drafting.
3. **Draft with AI.** Use whichever tool above fits your stack.
4. **Fact-check every number.** Open each source, confirm the figure and its date, and cite it inline. Delete anything you can’t source.
5. **Structure for extraction.** Put a direct answer under each question heading, and use tables and lists for comparisons. Our guide to [content ChatGPT cites](/get-cited-by-chatgpt/) covers the traits that get quoted.
6. **Add schema and alt text.** Generate FAQ or Article markup with the [schema markup generator](/tools/schema-markup-generator/) and check images with the [alt text checker](/tools/alt-text-checker/).
7. **Publish as a draft, then review.** A person reads the full post before it goes live, and the post says how it was made if that helps readers, which Google explicitly suggests for automated content. [25](#sprk-src-15)
8. **Run the [GEO checklist](/geo-checklist/)** on the published URL, then measure whether AI answers start mentioning it.

One thing you don’t need: extra files or special markup for AI search. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema.org structured data to appear in its AI features. [26](#sprk-src-16)

## What AI content tools for WordPress cost

| Budget | What you get | Ongoing costs to expect |
| --- | --- | --- |
| $0 plus provider usage | Official AI plugin or AI Engine free, with your own OpenAI, Claude or Gemini key | Your provider’s usage bill |
| Free tiers | Jetpack AI Assistant (20 requests), GetGenie (2,500 AI words/month) | Upgrade once the allowance runs out |
| Around $50–$120 a year | AIOSEO Basic (first year) or Yoast SEO Premium | Renewals at full price; AIOSEO AI credits |
| Around $80–$195 a year | AI Engine Pro, Divi AI | Provider usage for AI Engine |
| Monthly platform | Suparank Starter $49.99/month or Growth $79.99/month, plus $29.99/month for the Content Planner add-on if you want full articles | Usage shown as monthly credits; 25% off annual billing |

All figures as listed on vendor pages in September 2026. Prices change; confirm before you buy.## How to choose

- **You just want help inside the editor:** start with the official AI plugin on WordPress 7, or Jetpack AI Assistant if you don’t want to manage keys.
- **You want control over models and costs:** AI Engine with your own provider account.
- **Your pain is metadata at scale:** use the AI in the SEO plugin you already run (AIOSEO, Yoast or Rank Math) rather than adding another plugin.
- **You build on Divi:** Divi AI keeps design and copy in one place.
- **You care whether AI assistants cite the result:** write where your research lives and publish through the REST API, then track it; that is the job [Suparank’s content studio](/product/ai-content/) is built for.
